How to clean up your Mac desktop

The desktop is the most visible place on your computer, which is exactly why it fills up fastest. This guide shows how to clear it in a few minutes and how to keep it that way.

Why the desktop fills up

The biggest source is screenshots: macOS saves them right there by default. Add files you put down “just for a moment”, mail attachments, and everything dragged out of a browser.

A crowded desktop costs more than clarity. If “Desktop & Documents Folders” is turned on for iCloud Drive, every one of those files is also uploaded to the cloud and synced to your other devices.

Instant order: Stacks

Right-click an empty spot on the desktop and choose Use Stacks. macOS groups the files by kind: images, PDFs, screenshots, spreadsheets. Under Group Stacks By you can group by date or tags instead.

Stacks do not touch the files; they stay on the desktop. That makes them safe, but it is a view, not a filing system. A few weeks later the stacks themselves are full.

Save screenshots somewhere else

Press ⌘⇧5, click Options and pick a different location under Save to, for example a “Screenshots” folder inside Documents. From then on, no screenshot lands on the desktop.

For many people this one change keeps the desktop clear for good.

Tidy up in ten minutes

Create a folder called “Desktop archive” in Documents. Select everything on the desktop older than a week and drag it in. Whatever you have not missed a month later can be sorted at leisure or moved to the Trash.

That sounds like moving rather than tidying, and it is. Deciding where things belong is easier in the archive, because the pressure is gone.

Watch out for originals: moving an alias loses nothing. But if the desktop holds the original of a file other apps point to, check the path first.

When it should happen by itself

FILYXA can watch the desktop once you grant it access. It proposes a destination for every file: screenshots to their own folder, PDFs to Documents, old installers set aside for review. Every row states its reason.

Only what you tick gets moved. Nothing is ever deleted, and every run can be undone in one click. The app is free, with no subscription and no in-app purchases.
